Current Highlights

The Highlights section provides montlhy information on the latest progress and development within the Naturalhy project. Here you can find details on:

  • Papers and presentations that have been presented;

  • Deliverables that have been achieved;

  • Reports that have been completed;

  • Results that are significant/interesting (without giving away anything that is confidential);

  • Changes in personnel;

  • and many more

The current month's highlights is presented in this page. Current and previous highlight news are also available in the Archive in PDF format.

March & April 2008

WP2: SAFETY

An extensive programme of experiments has been completed at Loughborough University to measure the ignition energy of methane, hydrogen and mixtures of methane and hydrogen. The data has been analysed and a correlation developed which enables the prediction of the minimum ignition energy for any methane/hydrogen mixture within the flammable range. This has been validated against data in the literature for methane and hydrogen. A report will be prepared soon and also a publication for the literature.

WP3: DURABILITY

Results from measurements by TNO indicate that the resistance to hydrogen for the weld is the same as for the base metal, this was not expected.

The results from the fracture toughness tests on the pipeline materials indicate that there is no significant effect on embrittlement for 100% hydrogen. However the results from fatigue tests indicate that the max allowable level of hydrogen for modern pipeline steels is limited to lower values.

WP4: INTEGRITY

The final versions of two reports are now available.

  1. "Weld repair of hydrogen charged X52" and

  2. “Principles of resource allocation”

The report “Sensitivity Analysis, Knowledge of Defect Criticality” is currently being updated based on the latest material information from WP3.

WP7: DISSEMINATION

It has been agreed with MEPs that a NATURALHY presentation will be made to the prestigious European Parliamentary Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE).

The date has been set at 3rd July.

WP8: COORDINATION

A PEC meeting was held in Brussels, hosted by GERG, to discuss:

  • the planning of the final period for NATURALHY;

  • the NATURALHY workshop at the IGRC 2008;

  • and prepare arrangements for the Full Consortium and the WP meetings.

A meeting with the Technical Officer for NATURALHY was attended by Dave Pinchbeck and Gjalt Tiekstra to discuss the procedure related to the request for an extension of the project duration.

A declaration to agree to a 6 month extension of the project was prepared and sent to all partners. All partners agreed to assent to an extension.

Preparation of the fourth annual report has started.

Abstracts for the WHEC2008, IGRC2008 and the IHC2008 have been submitted.
