Objectives

The primary objective of WP6 is the development of a software decision support tool for the assessment of the technical suitability of a natural gas system (transmission, storage, distribution, end user infrastructure and appliances) for mixtures of hydrogen/natural gas and evaluation of the operational risks. The tool, incorporating the results of other Work Packages, should determine the technical conditions under which hydrogen can be injected in a defined existing natural gas system, with acceptable safety risks, acceleration of the aging processes, drawbacks for the end users involved and costs related to measures to overcome unacceptable consequences. Since the development of the tool is highly dependent upon the results obtained in the other Work Packages the main tasks on the Work Package are concentrated in the second half of the NATURALHY five year programme.

Description of Tasks

The structure of the Work Package tasks is as follows:

Task 6.1 Definition of the Tool. On this Task the initial step of the tool development is performed. The objective is to elaborate the DST foundation and obtain global agreement on functionality and end-user behaviour, which can be obtained by approving a non-functional prototype and a Concept Document.

Task 6.2 Prototype, Content and Data Model. Having completed and approved the Prototype and Concept Document, a first functional prototype, data descriptions and initial set of requirements definitions will be performed.

Task 6.3 Construction of the Tool and Task 6.4 Testing and Verification of the Tool. Having completed and validated the DST concepts and finalised collection of the relevant inputs from the other work packages, the development effort will proceed on finalising requirements, establish test process and criteria and build the complete tool after integration of the several modules. These tool development and testing tasks are planned to be carried out in an iterative process in accordance with the availability of input data from the other Work Packages.

Task 6.5 Deployment and Validation. Finally, after elaborating a first version of the DST, it will be tested on real end-user situations in the Netherlands, Greece and Portugal. This Test will go from the first deployment up to the end of the Naturalhy programme allowing for at least one complete revision and iteration after end-user feedback.

Current Status of Work Package Activities

During the first three years of the project WP6 commenced with preliminary activity in preparing the Definition of the Decision Support Tool, Task 6.1. This involved interaction with other Work Packages and potential end users to formulate an overview of this definition of the tool. A major novelty was also introduced: the adoption of the Dynamic Systems Development Methodology – DSDM, a standard software development methodology. By this decision, the WP6 Project is using a common, internationally recognised, development framework to the benefit of independent auditing, quality assessment and easier detailed planning and planning control. As such, this improved plan, copes with the changing requirements, iterative and stepwise development approach and content elaboration.

Additionally, as work progressed on the other Work Packages during Year 4, further details were available and brought to the WP6 schedule. At the end of Year 4 Task 6.2 Prototype, Content and Data Model tasks have been completed with the issue of the DST Concept Document, the Global DST Data Model and documents detailing the DST Initial Specification Requirements and Topology - Description of Gas Infrastructure. The main software development, Task 6.3 Construction of the Tool, is in an advanced state of progress with some software modules completed and with some WP specific modules awaiting final data from the other technical Work Packages, WP1 to WP5. Based on current forecasts for these WP inputs the final version of the DST is scheduled to be completed by WP6 in Month 58 (February 2009) ready for validation testing with three selected gas companies.
